Where is it from?
Our import partners, Falcon coffees have been working in Peru for several years now, buying speciality coffee from cooperatives and associations with which they have built lasting relationships.
In Peru, like some other origins, coffee farmers are sensitive to market changes and often lack basic training and the incentive to produce higher qualities of coffee, as premiums often don’t materialise. For these reasons Falcon decided to change the way they buy coffee in Peru and work directly with producers, allowing them to control and improve upon the existing quality and have full financial traceability. Ensuring these two factors would help them to pay higher prices for the coffees and to make sure that producers received a fair price for the coffee they delivered to us, above the market price. To do this, they set up a warehouse in Jaen and started to buy parchment directly from producers.
In 2018, Falcon Peru SARL was registered as an export company. They established a small warehouse with a QC lab in Jaen, Cajamarca, a northern coffee town. Here, farmers bring their dry parchment for quality analysis, with many tasting their own coffee for the first time. They are given an immediate cup score and offer price, which they can choose to accept or refuse. Over 2019 and 2020, Falcon paid, on average, double the commercial rate for parchment in Jaen.
As of 2022, Falcon Coffees Peru encompasses:
· 275 producers across 15 districts in Cajamarca.
· 3 producer associations.
· 10 full-time employees, with gender equality at its core.
In 2022, they centred our efforts on enhancing our operations and technical processes. This focus has allowed them to increase volumes and develop in-house facilities at our dedicated warehouse. They have also established additional drying facilities nearby to aid smallholder producers in achieving optimal moisture levels, thereby preserving cup quality.
In autumn 2022, they began conducting in-depth field research on carbon emissions at farm level as part of our Carbon Project. From the end of October, they will continue training producers on best practices for fertiliser application and assist them in diversifying the varieties on their farms.
Falcon controls the supply chain from farm to door, ensuring that our coffees qualify for the Blueprint Project label. This allows Falcon to provide economic transparency data for every household contributing to the coffee you enjoy.
